Ogemaw County Car Accident

An Ogemaw County car accident has resulted in the death of a woman.  Shannon Bentley, 25, of Sault Ste. Marie was tragically killed after experiencing engine trouble on I-75.  Another driver struck her car, which had only been partially pulled over onto the shoulder.  This driver, a 60-year old Tecumseh man, was taken to St. Mary’s of Michigan Hospital in Saginaw and underwent surgery on Monday.  He remains in critical condition.

This is a very tragic accident.  My sympathies go out to the Bentley family and their friends.  I also hope that the other driver is able to experience a full recovery.

My law firm represents people involved in car accidents.  Quite often, people are uncertain of their rights following a car accident like this one.  Both drivers have claims for No Fault insurance, which will pay for all of the male driver’s medical expenses and any lost wages as well as for a portion of the funeral expenses for Shannon Bentley.  In addition, the driver who is determined to be free of fault may have a legal claim against the at-fault driver depending on the severity of his or her injuries.  Since Ms. Bentley died, her injuries are clearly sufficiently severe for her to have a claim, but it would depend on how severe the other driver was injured to determine if he would have a claim.

Columbia School Bus Accident

A Columbia school bus accident injured 6 young children and two adults.  The school bus was hit in Norvell Township on M-124 near Lake Shore Drive.  The students were treated at Herrick Hospital in Tecumseh and Bixby Hospital in Adrian for non-life-threatening injuries.  The accident occurred as a driver crashed into another car stopped behind the bus.  The bus had stopped to pick up students.

It is very fortunate that none of the children or drivers were seriously injured.  Often, bus accidents can be some of the worst types of car accidents because most buses are not equipped with seat belts.  This accident serves as a reminder that drivers should pay extra attention to buses and their passengers.  No Fault benefits will cover all the children’s medical expenses and it seems like none of the other benefits available through the No Fault law will come into play because the injuries sustained are minor.
