Michigan Motorcycle Safety Courses

In order to obtain a motorcycle endorsement in Michigan, many people must take and complete an approved motorcycle safety course.  This includes people under the age of 18 and drivers over the age of 18 who have failed two motorcycle skills tests.

The motorcycle safety courses are offered through the Michigan Secretary of State’s office or through a third party program approved by the Secretary of State.  A list of approved Michigan motorcycle safety program courses can be found online.

There are several safety courses for new and experienced motorcyclists.  Taking a motorcycle safety course can help bikers avoid accidents and, hopefully, minimize the severity of any accidents that do occur

The Basic Rider Course is the beginning level program.  This is a safety course designed for new or inexperienced riders who need to learn or be refreshed on basic riding techniques.

The Performance Based Course is a one-day class for an experienced rider.  Completion of this course allows the biker to get his completion card endorsed.

The Experienced Rider Course is a safety course designed for an experienced motorcyclist who wants more than the basics.  This course teaches deeper fundamentals of riding to riders that already have their endorsements.  Many organized group riders require this course before experienced bikers can register with them.

If you would like more information about your rights after a Michigan motorcycle accident, you can order our FREE book, “The Ultimate Michigan Motorcycle Accident Handbook” by calling our law firm.  We will send it along with other important information.

Michigan Motorcycle Training Requirements Overview

The State of Michigan has established several requirements that must be met in order to legally drive a motorcycle.  Michigan’s licensing program is administered by the Secretary of State’s office.

The Secretary of State will issue a motorcycle endorsement for a driver’s license to a person if that person meets the following requirements.

§         Possess a valid driver’s license

§         Register the motorcycle at a Secretary of State’s branch office

§         Show proof of insurance of at least $20,000/$40,000 public liability and $10,000 property damage coverage

§         Pass a vision test

§         Pass a written driver’s knowledge test administered by the Secretary of State’s office

§         Complete a motorcycle safety course (if under 18)

§         Pass a motorcycle rider skills test

§         Present a completion card from a safety course or a skills test certificate within 1 year to a Secretary of State’s branch office

The State will charge a fee for issuing the motorcycle endorsement, which can be paid at the Secretary of State’s branch office.

Brain Injury Treatments | Michigan Car Accident Lawyers

I recently read about a new brain injury treatment that focuses on using social clues to treat brain injuries.  Before this study was released, it was already widely known that brain injuries may cause personality changes and changes in behavior, which can create difficultly in dealing with social situations.  The study focused on re-teaching basic social skills to people with brain injuries.

For example, handling sarcasm often presents a great difficulty for people with brain injuries because sarcasm involves positive words which are spoken in a negative tone or manner.  People with brain injuries often have difficulty interpreting the mixed messages.

The treatment prescribed in this study involved increasing sophisticated re-education as to how and why people send mixed messages in social settings and how to respond to them.  The patients reported some improvement in responding to new social situations, which is certainly a cause for hope for people with brain injuries.

Individuals who sustained brain injuries and their families in car accidents should contact Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. immediately to determine their legal rights.  Our office will start working on your case immediately and begin gathering the evidence to prove and win your case.

Traumatic Brain Injury and Delinquency | Michigan Car Accident Lawyers

Traumatic brain injuries are associated with delinquent behavior.  According to a new study by the University of Michigan, nearly one out of five delinquent youths suffer from a traumatic brain injury.  The study focused on young people ages 11 to 20 and found those with traumatic brain injuries had a significantly earlier onset of criminal and substance-using behavior, more lifetime substance abuse problems, and suicidal tendencies than youths without traumatic brain injuries.

The study defined traumatic brain injury as a head injury causing 20 minutes or more of unconsciousness.  The study did not assess post-injury treatment or severity of the initial injury.  However, it is well known that lack of treatment can only make the problems normally associated with a traumatic head injury worse.

The Michigan brain injury lawyers at Buckfire & Buckfire understand that these types of injuries have a tremendous effect on an individual’s ability to lead his or her normal life.  Changes in personality affect marriages, families, and friendships.  Head injury patients are often unable to return to work and suffer a significant impairment of earnings and earning potential.  Further, head injury patients often need expensive attendant care services due to their condition. If the injury arose from a car accident, motorcycle accident, truck accident, bicycle accident,  or pedestrian accident, there is often a Michigan No-Fault Insurance claim for benefits.

Individuals who sustained brain injuries and their families should contact Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. immediately to determine their legal rights.  Our office will start working on your case immediately and begin gathering the evidence to prove and win your case.
