Bicyclist Seriously Injured in a Macomb County Hit & Run Accident

Today’s news had a tragic story about a bicyclist seriously injured in a Macomb County hit and run accident on Sunday morning. According to the Clinton Township Police Department, 41-year-old John Destefanis was traveling southbound on Gratiot Avenue when he was allegedly hit by a blue Chevy Corvette that appears to have not stopped after hitting the bicyclist. Destefanis was taken to a local hospital where he is in critical condition. Clinton Township Police are still investigating the accident and ask that anyone with information on the accident call them at 586-493-7817.

I am very sorry to hear about this tragic accident and hope Mr. Destefanis has a complete and full recovery from his serious injuries. I hope that police find the person responsible for this tragic accident.

Our Michigan car accident lawyers advise accident victims of their legal rights. For this type of auto accident in Michigan, the injured bicyclist can submit a claim for Michigan No-Fault insurance benefits. No-Fault benefits will cover his medical expenses, lost wages, attendant care, replacement services, and other benefits related to injuries suffered in the accident. The injured party can claim these benefits even if he did not have a Michigan automobile insurance policy.

If the driver’s identity is not discovered, the bicyclist still has rights under the law. They may be able to file an uninsured motorists claim against their own insurance policy or another insurance policy to receive the No-Fault Benefits.

In addition, the car accident injury victim may also have claims for personal injuries against any driver determined to be at fault in this auto accident. The insurance company for the negligent driver typically pays a settlement for this type of case. In this lawsuit, the injured victim can claim damages and compensation for the injuries suffered in the accident. At the very least, he should hire the best possible lawyer to look into these possibilities.

An experienced Michigan car accident lawyer can assist the victim with this type of claim. Accident victims should not speak with the insurance adjuster for the negligent driver before consulting with an attorney.
