Monroe County Pedestrian in Hit and Run

A hit and run accident in Monroe County has killed a pedestrian.  Tonya Teresa Chapman was struck and killed at the southbound entrance ramp of I-75 at Johnstonville Road.  Anyone with any information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 994-7046.

This is a very unfortunate accident.  My sympathies are with Ms. Chapman’s family and friends.

I often encounter people who think that pedestrians are not eligible to receive Michigan No Fault benefits.  This is not true at all.  In an accident like this one, a pedestrian can receive No Fault benefits because her death was caused by a motor vehicle.  Therefore, Ms. Chapman can receive No Fault benefits as long as she or someone she lived with had a No Fault insurance policy.  These benefits will pay for a portion of her funeral costs and may cover lost wages and possibly other benefits as well.  If the driver is located, her family will also have a claim against that person, but even if the driver is never found, the family can still pursue a claim against Ms. Chapman’s insurance company as long as the policy holder had uninsured motorist coverage.
