Michigan Car Accident Lawyers Discuss How Seat Belts Prevent Child Injuries

Our Michigan car accident lawyers want to bring to attention the risks of not using seat belts properly in a motor vehicle. Using a booster seat lessens the risk of  injury by 50 percent in an auto accident. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents are encouraged to use a belt-positioning booster seat until a child reaches 57 inches, the height at which proper fit in an adult seat belt is expected.

Research has proven the effectiveness of child safety seats. Some of these statistics include:

  • Fatal injury was reduced by 71%  for infants younger that 1 year of age
  • Fatal injury was reduced by 54% for toddlers ages 1-4
  • Children ages 2-6 years old in child safety seats are approximately 28% less likely to receive a fatal injury
  • 284 out of 309 lives were saved in 2009 due to safety seats among children under age 5 in passenger vehicles

Not taking the proper precautions could be the difference between life and death. “Wearing a poorly positioned belt puts children at greater risk of injuries to abdominal organs, spine bones, and the spine itself,” says Michelle Macy, a pediatrician at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.

We highly advise parents to always use a booster seat for your child at all times while driving a vehicle.  Statistics prove how imperative the booster seat is to the safety of your child.  Take a few extra minutes to belt in your children properly. Our child injury lawyers in Michigan represent parents and their children in car accident cases.
